At the 2014 Conference for the Advancement of Math Teaching (CAMT) in Fort Worth, Texas, a woman approached our booth to share pictures of Foldables being used on the other side of the world. She agreed to let us share those with you, and sent this brief description of her trip:
“In June a team of five traveled to a small village in India. We had been invited to a school to train teachers. We worked with the teachers on topics like classroom management, child development and lesson planning. We wanted to model teaching strategies that these teachers could use in their classrooms. In preparation for the trip, we discussed teaching the teachers about paper folding and interactive notebooks. We decided to use those same strategies in our training sessions with the teachers. We prepared bags for each teacher with markers, pencils, scissors, and glue. Our regional service center printed booklets for us to use in the teacher training. The teacher trainees were enthusiastic about the new strategies we introduced them to.”
How exciting to share this strategy with educators! Dinah has visited schools and demonstrated Foldables and/or taught teachers how to use and adapt them in their own classrooms across the United States and Canada, as well as in Japan, Tanzania, Swaziland, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, and Mongolia. Teachers have been very receptive! She has often begun by working with the English-speaking schools in the area and expanding to the local schools as they express interest. One of our DZ trainers has also shared Dinah’s strategies as part of her mission work in Poland and Romania. These are clearly strategies that are valued around the world!
